Plumber Eastern Suburbs. Plumbing, Gas Fitting And Blocked Drains Update – October 2016

Gas Fitting – Gas Hot Water System Replacement. Instantaneous Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas appliances, like most modern technology has evolved hugely over the last few years. As people look to heating the most energy efficient and cost effective appliances, more and more clients in Sydney’s eastern suburbs are continuous-flow-gas-water-heaterswitching to gas for their hot water service, cooking and heating. The same applies to businesses looking to increase their ‘bottom line; through lowering their energy costs. Gas is generally considered the most cost effective way to heat hot water. For most homeowners or business owners, the cost of heating water is a major part of their finances associated with running their home or business. The ‘boom’ in the uptake of gas “Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems” or “instantaneous gas hot water systems” has been phenomenal over the last 10 years and is often the water heating system of choice in 2016 and is likely to be so going into 2017. These systems are a big change from the traditional hot water system, be they gas or electric. Instantaneous gas hot water systems are essentially designed to be tankless, that is there is no storage of water required with these systems. The design of these systems means that only when you need hot water, through turning on a hot water tap in your kitchen, bathroom vanity, shower or laundry does the instantaneous hot water system actually start producing hot water. This is a huge departure from the theory of ‘storage tanks’ that most people associate with hot water systems. The bottom line is that continuous hot water flow systems provide hot water on when required and have no storage element at all. In the case of a gas Continuous Flow Hot Water System, the water is heated by a gas flame as the water passes through the unit, meaning that the energy efficiency ratings of these hot water systems are very high. No hot water storage system , be they electric powered of gas powered can be 100 percent efficiency is storing hot water with no losses of heat, Most hot water storage systems has some sort of ‘cycling’ of their energy input sources to maintain a constant hot water temperature. This equates to significant ‘losses’ of energy and the bottom line is that this means higher energy bills and a less ‘environmentally friendly’ way to heat the hot water that we all rely on.

Other Benefits Of Instantaneous Gas Hot Water Heating Systems.

Lower Energy Inputs.

With a modern, high efficiency instantaneous gas hot water service that is tankless they are only required to heat the input cold water to a temperature of 50°C, and not a higher temperature because the risk of bacterial growth is not considered a health issue with instantaneously heated tankless hot water systems, whereas hot water systems that use storage tanks require heating of the water to higher temperatures to avoid this potential health risk. This, again, means lower running costs as less energy inputs are required to heat the water. It also equated to lower greenhouse gas emissions which is good for the environment.

Compact Size

One of the major benefits of having an instantaneous gas hot water service (also known as ‘continuous flow hot water system’), is the benefit of their small size in comparison to storage hot water systems. A ‘typical’ instantaneous gas hot water service designed for a family would have dimensions of around 500mm x 400 mm x 200 mm – very small, about the same size as a large microwave oven, for example. Typically they are flush mounted onto an external wall and are far less obtrusive and way more ‘easy on the eye’ than a large, conventional gas storage hot water service.

Factors To Take Into Account When Selecting An Instantaneous Gas Hot Water Heating System

We can assist you in selecting the most appropriate sized system for your family or business. Factors like the number of bathrooms in the property, the energy star rating of the system, the flow rate, the warranty, the ability to control the temperature via remote controls and the ease of use of those controls are important issues worth considering before purchasing an instantaneous gas hot water system. Having an ‘overheating’ safety function designed into the system is very important for obvious reasons.

The long term reliability of hot water systems is an important issue. There was a report done by Choice that looked at various brands available on the Australian market for hot water services which makes for interesting reading and that article can be found here.

How Do Instantaneous Hot Water Services Actually Work?

These amazing hot water systems combine many different forms of modern technologies that include sophisticated microprocessor controlled electronic circuitry, heat exchanger technology, control sensors, fans and plumbing fittings. In basic terms this is how a gas continuous hot water system is designed to operate:

  1. Someone in the home or business where the hot water system is installed turns on a hot water tap in a sink, bathtub or mixer tap in the shower.
  2. Water flow commences and enters the instantaneous gas hot water service which is installed on one of the external walls of the property.
  3. An electronic water flow sensor detects the flow of water and sends and electrical signal to the onboard computer built into the hot water system.
  4. The onboard computer sends an output signal to ignite the gas burner.
  5. The incoming water is circulated through the onboard heat exchanger.
  6. The burner heats the water in the heat exchanger to the desired temperature. The control of the temperature is controlled by the sophisticated onboard electronic control circuitry which not only monitors the water temperature but acts as a safety controller.
  7. When the controller senses that the tap has been turned off the hot water system is shut down waiting for the next time a hot water tap is turned on.

Important: Remember, whichever gas hot water system you go for, only used an appropriately licensed plumber and gasfitter to do the work.

Water Savings And WELS Ratings – Plumbing Tips And Advice

What Is WELS?

You have probably seen or read about WELS ratings in regards to water saving technologies and devices but what exactly is WELS? WELS stands for: Water Efficiency Labelling and Standard. It is a system that was set up by the federal government to help consumers save on money by conserving the usage of water. This not only has financial

benefits for home and business owners but is making a significant environmental impact – Australia is the driest continent on earth and we must all do ‘our bit’ to save this precious commodity where ever we can.

The WELS Rating

The WELS rating system is the water equivalent to the energy saving star system that most of us are familiar with when looking to purchase a new refrigerator, electric hot water system or any other electrical appliance. The WELS system gives a star rating to appliances that use water. These appliances include toilets, shower heads, and tapware.  You will see WELS stickers displaying a certain number of stars and like their energy counterparts operate on the principle that the more stars are displayed the more water efficient the appliance of fitting is.

Practical Application Of WELS Ratings – Showerheads

The humble domestic shower accounts for an astounding amount of water usage in Australia. In the average eastern suburbs Sydney home, for example, it is estimated that between 20 and 30 percent of the water usage is down to water saving showerhead - WELS ratedshowering. In 2016 when looking to purchase or install a new shower head you will see that retailers of shower heads will display the WELS star rating and the litres per minute that the particular shower head uses. This means that consumers can get an accurate comparison as the the water efficiency of the different shower heads on offer. By getting a licensed plumber to install a new high WELS rated shower head in your shower you can save a huge amount of water, decrease your quarterly water bills and do you bit for water conservation in Australia.
